The Chair should be responsible for orienting the new faculty. However, the Chair and the Administrative Professional may need to work together to complete all of the orienting tasks that need to be completed to help acclimate the new faculty and ensure successful integration into the UF community.
Check-In with Faculty:
- Ask what is working well and not well?
- Ask how meetings with department members and other colleagues are going?
- Complete department tour
- Ask about acclimation to the Gainesville community.
- Check on progress of benefits
- Go over Faculty Mentoring Handbook and the tenure and promotion process
- Review UF organizational structure and review the New Faculty Orientation Canvas site.
- Discuss the department’s strategic plan.
- Make sure faculty has access to the tools, resources, and personnel to complete their teaching, research, service, and extension responsibilities.
- Check to see if required training has been completed.
- Review faculty handbook and answer questions. Explain the role of the Faculty Assembly, Faculty Union, and Faculty Senate.
- Inquire about benefits enrollment.
- Provide examples and opportunities for mentoring.
- Connect to National Professional Associations, UF Affinity Groups, and relevant UF sponsored events.
